This would be scary in a vacuum, but what makes this flashflood odd is that hasn’t rained and they have no idea where the water came from. In it are many people, houses and the like. Making matters worse, their compass and phones won’t work.Ī large wave rushes by, almost carrying the protagonists with them. Two hikers, Masaki and Mimura, are hiking in some unnamed woods when they realize they’re lost. Or at least, not the way you would expect Junji Ito to scare you. The phrase ‘heaving waves of nostalgia’ is at the forefront of one’s mind when reading this, not particularly frightening story. That being said, it did make me think about all the celebrities that don’t really contribute much to society (such as reality stars (‘Only Way is Essex’, ‘Made in Chelsea’ etc.) and certain politicians) and how they seem to easily become the centre of many people’s worlds. There are some interesting ideas and twists, but nothing that would make me want to jump back to the story any time soon. This is my least favourite of the tales in the story collection, purely because the antagonists are the most stereotypical antagonists, which is weird, given how unordinary all of Junji Ito’s characters are. The girls notice Keisuke is the only audience member not laughing, and sneer at him as he drags Tsuguo out of the performance, which does not please the duo all that much…

This may come to a surprise to you, but their act is shockingly bad.Īt first, no one gives them attention, but then audience members start uncontrollably laughing one by one until everyone is in complete hysterics. Tsuguo then takes him to a stand-up comedy show, despite Keisuke’s protests, in an attempt to make the chap smile once more.Įnter ‘Twilight Pacific Peace’, a female comedy duo who claim that if they get enough laughs they can rule the world. Keisuke discusses the news with his friend Tsuguo, who is revealed to never smiles or laughs at anything. The story begins with a dead comedian, with his face contorted into a horrible grin, as if he died laughing. Also known as ‘The Ghosts of Golden Time’
